About

The Flax Project was founded by Vicky Putler in 2020. We planted our first field of flax in 2021, making 2026 our 6th year of flax growing. We became Flax Project CIC in 2023. Our vision is a sustainable, green, UK textiles and fibre industry – from field to fabric.

Our mission is to create a locally produced linen with a local supply chain and processing hub for the SWUK, growing and processing for ourselves and others.

Through the workshops and community flax growing activities we are building a community around local textile and fibre production, exploring the heritage of flax and reviving the old traditions and rituals of arable farming.

Vicky is currently developing processing machinery, working towards an integrated ‘grow, process, spin, weave and sell’ social enterprise involving local small farmers and creative enterprises in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall.

The ultimate aim is to reintroduce commercial flax and high quality linen production to South West UK, find innovative solutions to the problem of pollution and environmental damage and provide jobs for the local economy, linking rural areas with towns in Cornwall and the city of Plymouth.
